What is Sage & Palo Santo — and How to Use Them

Two of the most beloved tools in spiritual practice, sage and palo santo have been used for centuries across cultures for cleansing, healing, and ceremony. But what exactly are they, and how do you use them? Here's everything you need to know.

White Sage

What is it?

White sage (Salvia apiana) is a sacred plant native to the coastal mountains of California and northern Mexico. It has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples in purification ceremonies known as smudging. Its strong, earthy, herbaceous scent is instantly recognisable and deeply cleansing.

What is it used for?

  • Energetic cleansing — clearing negative, stagnant, or unwanted energy from people, objects, and spaces
  • Protection — creating an energetic shield around your home or aura
  • Meditation — deepening focus and clearing the mind before practice
  • Ceremony — marking transitions, new beginnings, or sacred moments

How to use sage

Light the tip of your sage bundle until it catches, then gently blow out the flame so it smoulders. Hold it over a fireproof dish and move it around your space, yourself, or objects you wish to cleanse. Always move with intention and keep a window open to allow the energy to leave.

Palo Santo

What is it?

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) means "holy wood" in Spanish. It comes from a tree native to South America — particularly Peru and Ecuador — and has been used by Andean shamans for healing and ceremony for centuries. Its scent is warm, sweet, and woody with hints of citrus and mint.

What is it used for?

  • Uplifting energy — unlike sage which clears, palo santo fills a space with positive, warm energy
  • Creativity & focus — widely used before creative work or study
  • Stress relief — the scent has natural calming properties
  • Spiritual connection — deepening meditation and prayer

How to use palo santo

Hold your palo santo stick at a 45-degree angle and light the tip. Let it burn for about 30 seconds, then blow it out. The wood will continue to smoulder and release its sacred smoke. Move it around your space or simply place it in a fireproof holder and let the scent fill the room.

Sage vs. Palo Santo — Which Should You Use?

Think of sage as the deep clean and palo santo as the finishing touch. Many practitioners use sage first to clear the space, then follow with palo santo to invite in positive energy. Together they make a powerful combination.
